Zachary McClane is the most popular senior at Bellevue High School. He is handsome, smart, and quarterback of the football team. And even better, he has a motorcycle. Gray Evans—Zachary’s classmate—is the opposite. His grades are decent, but he’s always been too shy for sports, and his postgraduation aspiration is to enroll in an art school, something his businesswoman mother doesn’t approve of. Worst of all, he is picked on for his green eyes. Gray has had a secret crush on Zachary since their freshman year, but he is convinced that the other boy would never be interested in him—not when he can have any girl he wants. One morning, after a day of being bullied for his eyes and an argument with his mother over his college plans, Gray wakes up to find he is the only person in his neighborhood. He heads to school and sees it’s deserted there too. Gray worries that he might be the last person left in Bellevue until he runs into Zachary on the football field. Zachary had also feared he was the last person in town. Neither boy can understand this sudden—strange—phenomenon, and together the pair of them ride through Bellevue and its surrounding towns on Zachary’s motorcycle, only to find them uninhabited. Gray and Zachary soon realize they are the last two people on earth. At first, this worries them, but it’s not long before neither cares. Gray loves being with Zachary—who he finds shares his love of anime and video games. Gray shows Zachary some of his drawing techniques, and Zachary attempts to teach Gray how to play football, though they are both hopeless at the others’ passions—but neither minds. To Gray’s surprise, his unlikely friendship with Zachary soon becomes something more, and it’s not long before the two of them begin hoping they will remain the last boys on earth forever.
